Questions

Why is the output sound from the phono input not nearly as loud as all the other inputs and the quality of the sound is not as good. I have a technics SL 1200 with a shure V 15 mm cartridge with a shure VM35E stylus. Quality RCA cables and solid ground.

Hello, Phono cartridges vary enormously in the their ouput voltage. Some will be quiter than others. Some optional external phono pre-amps have gain settings to allow for a higher output to be fed into your moving magnet cartridge and can be bought from audio specialists such as Music Direct.

I have an old Denon AVR 1912 running sound through 8 speakers built into my walls and ceiling in a movie room. the speakers are wire connected but via Wi-Fi the receiver can play through my iPhone. Can this do all of that too?

Hello, The AVR-1912 is a 7.1 surround sound AV receiver. The DRA-800H is a stereo AV receiver. While the DRA-800H might be able to drive all eight of your speakers (this will depend on the collective speaker load and how what type of speaker switching box you will be using), the signal to each of the pairs of speakers you have will be the same stereo feed, not in discrete surround sound channel feeds. As the AVR-1912 is a seven channel receiver, it looks as though you may well being doing this already. If you require a discrete surround sound feed, this could work well for you and can be operated from your iphone with either our AVR app or our HEOS app: https://www.denon.com/en-us/product/av-receivers/avr-x3800h/300609-new.html

Why is there no available Owners Manual for the DRA-800H at the .pdf link provided on that product page? All that I received with mine is the Quick Start Manual . This Receiver was purchased new in the unopened box from Crutchfield in Mid-May 2023.

Can I connect 4 Ohm speakers? One pair, one per channel. And with what effect on THD? I see THD jumps when connected to 6 Ohms speakers, at least from what I can deduce from published specs.

Hello, The DRA-800H is able to handle a 4 ohm load, one pair at a time. If you wish to run two pairs at the same time, they will need to be 8 ohm speakers. THD numbers will depend on source content, desired volume level, and the demands of the speaker - which can vary significatly from model to model. Some 4 ohm speakers are much more demanding than others (Magapans for example). If you know your speakers to be particularly demanding, you may wish to consider a PMA1700NE - which is built to perform well with just about any speaker currently in production.

I have 4 Ohm speakers. I’m pretty sure performance from this amp will be diminished if running those speakers, if it runs at all. Can I not connect speakers to this unit, and use the pre out to a separate amp? Without damage to output stage?

Hello, The DRA-800H is equppied to handle a four ohm speaker load - as detailed on the speaker binding post labeling. The pre-outs on the rear panel pertain only to Zone 2, and also a sub-woofer.
