Rated 5 out of 5 by from Experience perfection Perfect addition to my home theater. Music, movies, sound absolutely perfect. Variety of sound fields gives you options aplenty. Setup was easy with onscreen menu, Auddesy speaker setup proved helpful to get full body sound. Had to retweek subwoofer after, but all was good. Fortunately I was able to get it for $ 300 off !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny I scoured the internet for days to find my next AV receiver. Considering the features for the price, no other receiver matched the AVR-970H for my budget. As I was upgrading from a 20 year old Yamaha, produced before HDMI was a thing, I really didn't understand how everything was going to work. And the first day with the Denon was rough. Hard learned lesson: Check for a firmware update before you do anything else! After taking the time to set everything up, including figuring out the Inputs grid, I am extremely pleased with this machine. I worried that the 90W output was too low, I had 110W previously, but it sounds like it drives the speakers harder, which was a nice surprise. I appreciate the flexibility in assigning the second zone. I'm enjoying a 7.1 configuration now, but I'll swap to a 5.1 and put zone 2 speakers outside for the summer time. In which case, the HEOS functionality and app have been a pleasure. They suffer from a lack of basic music player functions, like, why can't I access my Playlists from the receiver directly?!? I don't want to open the app when I'm sitting in front of the receiver, remote in hand. Oh well, once it's playing, it's working well for us. In terms of driving sound, I give this receiver a 10/10. Love it!

Questions

Hi, I bought the AVR-S970H few months ago, all work fine, now I want to connect an external Amplifier to my Denon AV-Receiver to drive my 2 front speakers, since the AVR-S970H does not have a pre-out connection for that, what are the alternatives ? thanks

Asked by: EdouardY
Hello, As the AVR-S970H does not have Main Zone pre-outs, it would be necessary to consider models from the X Series line of AV receivers we offer. The AVR-X1800H has front left and right pre-outs. The AVR-X2800H does not have any Main Zone full range pre-outs. All the models above the AVR-X2800H (starting with the AVR-X3800H) have a full bank of Main Zone pre-outs. I currently have your 2700h receiver but would like to add an upfiring speaker pair to my existing 5.1 setup. I don’t believe the current receiver has the necessary outputs to do this but would this receiver allow that?

Asked by: Michael814
Hello, The AVR-X2700H is equipped to deliver a signal to an upfiring Atmos signal pair of speakers in addition to an existing 5.1 set-up. Here is a ink which provides details of how this can be done: https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX2700H/NA/EN/DRDZSYpvilxnds.php

I have hard wired celling speakers in 3 different rooms. Will I be able to connect them to the AVR-S970H receiver and stream different music and control the volume in the different rooms from a phone app?

Asked by: MS73
The AVR-S970H can be configured as a Zone 2 receiver. For example, the AVR-S970H can power a 5.1 surround system in the main zone while also powering 2 additional speakers in a second room (Zone 2). Individual volume and source are available for the 2 zones. If you want to connect a third zone, a speaker selector box off the zone 2 terminals will be required. However, the 2 rooms will output the same volume and source. Speaker selector boxes with manual volume controls are available. Speaker selector boxes are available 3rd party. Other options include the Denon HEOS Drive or the Denon AVR-X4800H. Both of these options will provide you with 3 sources and volume ability. - https://www.denon.com/en-us/product/av-receivers/avr-x4800h/300608-new.html - https://www.denon.com/en-us/product/amplifiers/heos-drive-hs2/137195.html

Can I run this as a 5.1 setup with the front tower speakers bi-amped? My older Pioneer allows me to use four of the seven channels to power my towers bi-amped but it's days are numbered.

Asked by: MarcB
Hello, Unfortunately, the AVR-S970H does not support Bi-amping. All the models in our X-Series line-up offer bi-amping with at least a 5.1 set-up, starting with the AVR-X1800H. Here is a link to our X Series models: https://www.denon.com/en-us/category/x-series-av-receivers/

Is this receiver capable of a wireless rear speaker surround setup or is the wireless setup for a 2 channel audio feed and not surround?

Asked by: giga
Hello, The wireless speaker support with the AVR-S970H is for a 2 channel feed - typcially for secondary locations/rooms in your home, in up to 32 locations using our free HEOS app with the Home speaker options. Here is a link to the details: https://www.denon.com/en-us/category/wireless-speakers/ Surround sound speakers need to be hard-wired for the Main Zone.
